In this self-portrait, Pan Yuling created a classical atmosphere of Chinese style. She wore a black embroidered cheongsam and sat beside the table, her deep eyes containing strong melancholy. It was in World War II and Paris had fallen into enemy hands. Pan Yuliang lived in the suburb of the city and she missed her motherland and relatives all the time.
