To produce carved red lacquerware, one color or many colors are lacquered on the vessel body. After one layer of color is dry, another layer would be added to it until they reach dozens or even hundreds of layers. And then engravings would be done on the thick layer of lacquers. Due to different colors, the lacquerware is divided into carved red, carved green, carved black and carved marbled lacquerware, among which, red is most common. Carved lacquerware has appeared in the Tang dynasty and was most popular in the Ming and Qing dynasties. The surface of the ink rest is decorated with rhomboid forms; its sides are decorated with meandering pattern; its skirt is decorated with tortoise-shell pattern inside which flowers are engraved. And the four legs are curved. Brocade design is widely used in the engraving, which is highly decorative with delicate, gorgeous but elegant patterns.
