Bluish Glaze Pottery Pot with Carved Design

Unearthed in Hefei, Anhui province in 1960

The pot has a dish-shaped mouth, a straight neck, a globate belly and a low ring foot. There are four bridge-shaped ears on its shoulder, which are decorated with cloud scroll pattern and attached with rings. The rim of its mouth is decorated with sunken bow ring and wave patterns. The neck is decorated with sunken bow ring, wave and rhomboid patterns. The upper part of the belly is decorated with plantain-leaf pattern of which the leaves point downward and make two successive overlays. The middle part is decorated with wave pattern and the lower part is decorated with cloud scroll pattern. The pot body is grayish-red and hard. The blue-grey glaze is applied only to the waist of the pot. This kind of glaze used lead compounds as fluxing agent and melted at about 700 ℃.  It is a kind of low temperature glazes. The success of lead-glazed pottery is one of the outstanding achievements of the ceramic technology in Han dynasty.
