On one side of the ink are some intaglio regular-script characters filled with gold — “Ti Ding Nan Yu Bai Jue Tu” (on Ding Nanyu’s paintin g of a hundred sparrows) by Cheng Junfang and a seven-syllable verse carved in relief. The whole poem consists 16 lines and 112 characters on total and is a compliment to the painting of a hundred sparrows. It is followed by a rectangular seal “Cheng Youbo” in seal character filled with gold. On the reverse side is a picture of a hundred sparrows. Since “jue” (peerage) equals to “que” (sparrow), a hundred sparrows then mean a hundred peerage.
