You Cui (courtesy name Shuzi), was born in Jiaxing, Zhejiang province. His year of birth or death was unknown. A commoner, he followed Hu Mei and moved to Pinghu with his family. He made a living by painting, and his works enjoyed quite a reputation. His surname was found in works and records, yet his works were rarely handed down except this one. On the painting is his signature “Painted by You Cui in Zuili”. (Zuili, ancient place, another name of Jiaxing)
