Hu Kaiwen Inkstick in the Shape of Weight of Qin Dynasty

     The inkstick is in the shape of weight of Qin dynasty. On one side of the weight surface is the inscription carved in intaglio and filled with gold. The inscription is in small seal script and consists 100 characters,which reads as follow: “On the 26th year of his reign (221 BC), the king annexed the vassal states and unified the whole country. People enjoyed peace and the king designated himself Emperor. He ordered Prime minister Zhuang and Prime minister Wan to regulate the weights and the measures,unifying all the inconsistencies and clarify all the unclear ones…. ” On the other side of the weight surface is the inscription of a postscript written by Duan Fang, the then General governor of Hu-Guang. The postscript consists 111 characters in 16 lines, which are in regular script and are curved in relief. It reads as follow:“It is recorded in The Law and Calendar of the History of Han Dynasty that the units of weight include zhu, liang, jin, jun and shi. 24 Shu equals to one liang; 16 liang equals to one jin; 30 jin equals to one jun. Four jun equals to one shi. According to the present local weight measurement, the standardized four-liang coin of Qin dynasty collected by Liu Yanting in Dongwu weighs 1.8 liang today. One jin in Qin dynasty weighs 7.2 liang today. And this weight weighs 54 jin, which is about 4 jun. The weight is made of stones. Of the 20 weights that have been made, this one is the best. — Postscripts by Duan Fang in Gengyang in October, the year of Kuimao, Guangxu Reign.”Followed by the inscription is a small seal “the Tao studio”.
